Frysian clay, a passion for quality, modesty and impeccable craftsmanship, those are the values that make Royal Tichelaar Makkum unique in the ceramic industry. Makkum is a source of honest products, in which history and contemporary developments in ceramic workmanship are inspiringly blended.
After her successful B-set, Soup-Set, Big White Pot and Red White Vase, Hella Jongerius was asked to extend for 2005 the collection with her interpretation of one of our company history's major products: majolica plates. Such plates, rather basic and for daily domestic use, were produced in great numbers between 1700 and 1890. To keep the price low, the back was covered with cheap transparent lead glazing, while the front was -typically for majolica- tin glazed white with a simple decoration. The glazing was and is achieved by immersion. In her design Hella Jongerius accentuated prominently the transition from transparent to white and let the plates plunge in the glazing only partially, which adds a separation to the elementary decoration. Less is more: the outcome is a most attractive series of products, which symbolise, in a contemporary way, the tradition and long history of Royal Tichelaar.
