Frysian clay, a passion for quality, modesty and impeccable craftsmanship, those are the values that make Royal Tichelaar Makkum unique in the ceramic industry. Makkum is a source of honest products, in which history and contemporary developments in ceramic workmanship are inspiringly blended.
Using medieval shards donated by the Museum Boymans van Beuningen, Jongerius takes the initiative in a postmodern restoration-project. As starting point she created 7 archetypes in which she glued the shards with epoxy. Some parts of the vases and pots where painted in bright colors; old and new were joined together.
In 1998 two pots from this series were cast in porcelain, which resulted in solid industrial pots. The casting seams are still visible. The pots appear to consist of more than one piece.
As with the medieval pots, each of Jongerius’ pots has the thumbprint of its creator on the side. The vase has a red band of car spray paint. This is done to mock the tradition of glazing within the ceramics world.
